Athletic Bilbao are among the most in form teams in La Liga at the moment. Ernesto Valverde’s side is set to face Rayo Vallecano this weekend at Estadio de Vallecas, while the latter are hoping to stay afloat from the relegation zone.
To begin with, Vallecano are in treacherous waters heading into Matchday 26 and are in 14th position on the table, with 26 points to their name after 24 ties. Following a 1-1 draw against Real Betis last time out, Rayo are just two points from the drop zone.
Athletic Club is currently in eighth place, having amassed 34 points from 25 games. The popular Spanish side are on a run of three consecutive wins, with the most recent result being a 2-1 win against Elche at San Mames last Friday.
Also, Bilbao will no doubt be keen on European football next season and trails sixth place by three points, a position that is currently held by Celta Vigo.
Vallecano’s stuttering form includes three losses, one win and one draw in the last five league ties, while Bilbao noted one defeat, one draw, and three victories in their previous handful of matches.

Speaking after Bilbao’s win against Elche, coach Valverde immediately shifted his attention to Rayo Vallecano while urging his side to remain resolute for the rest of the campaign.
"We still have work to do. Right now, we are only focusing on the next match against Rayo Vallecano,” Vallecano said.
"We have something in this team that we must maintain: persistence. That's how we were able to win."
