Sunday, 28 September 2025
The
2025 Japanese MotoGP is scheduled to take place in a town located in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, called Motegi, on 28 September.
What to know about the Japanese MotoGP
Established in 1999, the main venue that held the Japanese MotoGP races for years was the Suzuka Circuit, until it was permanently replaced by the Mobility Resort Motegi from 2004 onwards.
This was after the Suzuka Circuit faced criticism for its short runoff areas and dangerous trackside barriers, causing the death of Japanese rider Daijiro Kato and the injuries of Marco Melandri and Alex Barros at the 2003 Japanese Grand Prix.
The 2020 and 2021 races were cancelled due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The event is due to take place at the Mobility Resort Motegi until at least 2030.
Most recent race
The San Marino and the Rimini Riviera MotoGP, which was the 16th round of the 2025 MotoGP World Championship calendar, took place on 14 September.
The race was won by Ducati's Marc Marquez, while Marco Bezzecchi of Aprilia and Alex Marquez finished second and third, respectively.
Standings
Marc Marquez is still placed at the top of the 2025 MotoGP riders' standings, having won 11 races in the current campaign.
His brother, Alex, and Francesco Bagnaia of Ducati are placed second and third, respectively, as the three Ducati riders battle for the MotoGP world championship.
Looking at the constructors' standings, dominant Ducati are placed at the top, having won 14 races this season, followed by Aprilia and KTM, respectively.
Favourites
With the Japanese MotoGP title up for grabs, all eyes will be on the top three riders, Marc Marquez, Alex Marquez and Bagnaia, due to their eye-catching performances in the current season.
Bezzecchi, on the other hand, is also a contender for the Japanese MotoGP crown as the Italian motorcycle racer's form has improved in recent months and he is placed fourth in the 2025 MotoGP riders' standings.
Quotes
“It was a really positive weekend, I am very happy, we were fast throughout all three days," Ducati's Franco Morbidelli, who is placed sixth in the 2025 MotoGP riders' standings, said after finishing fourth at the 2025 San Marino and the Rimini Riviera MotoGP.
"We worked very well, and I have to thank the team, because after Barcelona we arrived here, and we were aiming to do a solid weekend. That was the case, and it’s thanks to the team and to all the people who came to support us.
"Here in Misano, I took things easier in the race, especially at the beginning, and then I tried to bring home the result that was on our hands. We have confidence from this kind of performance, now we focus on tomorrow’s tests and arrive to Japan with a good feeling.”
