World no. 32 J.T. Poston will be determined to put his horror showing at TPC River Highlands in the back of his mind when he tees it up at the John Deere Classic from 2-5 July.
The American went into the Travelers Championship on a high after an impressive start to June which saw him win the Memorial Tournament before finishing T4 at the US Open.
Poston was 3 under as he stepped onto the 13th tee, the lone par 5 on the back nine. His tee shot landed in the middle of the fairway, but it all went wrong from there.
The 33-year-old's approach shot found the greenside bunker and he landed on the apron after splashing out. He then chipped into the water three times before getting on the green with his 10th shot.
Poston ended up two-putting from 13 feet out to finish with a rare septuple bogey 12 and he went on to place 69th in the 72-man field.
The four-time PGA Tour winner hadn't managed a top-10 finish in 2026 prior to his victory at Jack's Place and missed the cut at the PGA Championship three weeks earlier.
Poston spoke about his nightmare experience in Cromwell, telling Golfweekly: "First off, just hitting in that bunker is the last place we should have been.
"It just ended up against the back of the lip and I didn't have much of a shot. I knew if I flew the bunker shot on the green, it was gonna go in the water based on where it was.
"I feel like it's just going to hop and that takes all the speed out of it [if I'd considered putting it]. And you've got this big false front you got to get it over.
"So my worry with trying to putt it was it would not have enough speed to really get there.
"obviously, in hindsight, I would have just hit to 12 feet and make by seven, but it's one of those where, like, you feel like you can hit the shot, and so you try and execute it."
