2025-26 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 7
Atletico Madrid v Real Madrid
Estadio Metropolitano
Madrid, Spain
Saturday, 27 September 2025
Kick-off is at 16h15
The first Madrid derby of the
La Liga season sees Atletico Madrid lock horns with neighbours Real Madrid at the Metropolitano on Saturday, September 27.
Los Colchoneros have struggled to get going in the new campaign, winning just one of their opening five matches to fall way behind in the title race.
Diego Simeone's side had to wait until matchday 4 to register their first victory against Villarreal (2-0) and they dropped points yet again in a 1-1 draw with Real Mallorca on September 21.
Atletico trail league leaders Real by nine points in 12th place, but they take heart from their recent record against their city rivals after going unbeaten in their last five meetings.
Los Blancos haven't tasted success in this fixture since 18 September 2022 when they ran out 2-1 victors at the same venue, while both their encounters last term ended in 1-1 draws.
Xabi Alonso's side have the only perfect record in the Spanish top flight after five rounds and they lead arch-rivals Barcelona by two points at the top of the table.
A 2-0 triumph over Espanyol on September 20 saw them reach double figures for goals scored this season (10) and it was their third clean sheet.
Simeone is confident that Atleti's fortunes will improve once all their new signings are fully bedded in, but he believes their performances have warranted more than what is showing in the standings.
"We're trying to build a new team, a lot of players have arrived and we knew this could happen, that we were going to go through this process," the Argentine said.
"We hope that efficiency and forcefulness will bring us closer to the reality we deserve and don't yet have."
Alonso still wants more from his players despite their strong start, but he believes they are on the path to success.
"We're improving, we're on the right track. We're still in the process of building the foundations and pillars. We need to be more consistent in our repetition," the Spaniard said.
"The other day we put in a strong, solid performance. We can improve, but that tells us we're doing things right... We must have the ambition to want more and be hungry. This year we want to collect a lot of points, and to do that we have to win a lot of games."
