Nico Echavarria is back in Japan to defend his title on Thursday, October 9 as the
Baycurrent Classic is hosted at the Yokohama Country Club for the first time.
The Colombian claimed his second victory on the PGA Tour when he carded 20-under 260 to beat Max Greyserman and Justin Thomas by one stroke in 2024.
Echavarria, who is ranked No. 64 in the world, almost added the Sony Open in Hawaii to his list of accolades at the start of 2025 after losing to Nick Taylor in a playoff.
The 31-year-old's only other top-10 finish this season came at the Rocket Classic (T6), although he was in contention at the Wyndham Championship before falling away in the final round to finish T19.
Echavarria competed in the Procore Championship most recently - the first event of the FedExCup Fall - but he missed the cut.
He shared the lead after 54 holes at the Valspar Championship back in March, only to shoot a 3-over 74 on the final day. However, those experiences have been a good learning experience for him.
"I think that feeling of being uncomfortable in those moments is not easy, but the more you're there, the better it is for you and your mind in the long run," Echavarria said.
"I learned a lot. I think it's fun to be up there in contention on Sunday. I didn't have the final day that I wanted, but the more you put yourself up there, the better you're going to do in the future."
