2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers (UEFA)
Group F - Matchday 7
Portugal v Ireland
Estádio José Alvalade
Lisbon, Portugal
Saturday, 11 October 2025
Kick-off is at 20h45
Portugal will battle it out with a wounded Ireland side in the
2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Estádio José Alvalade on 11 October.
Current Form
The Team of the Quincunxes edged out Hungary 3-2 away on 9 September as they made it back-to-back wins in the World Cup qualifiers after defeating Armenia.
This will be Portugal's first home game in these qualifiers and they were undefeated at home in the recent 2024/25 UEFA Nations League, recording two successive wins.
Meanwhile, Ireland suffered a 2-1 defeat to Armenia away on 9 September and they are winless in the World Cup qualifiers, having also drawn with Hungary.
Furthermore, the Boys in Green are winless on the road in the ongoing qualifiers, having registered a defeat in their only away game so far.
Team News
Nélson Semedo, Matheus Nunes and Rafael Leão are all back in the Portuguese squad, but their national team teammate João Cancelo misses out due to an injury.
Ireland, on the other hand, have named Séamus Coleman in their squad as he returns for the first time since September 2024, but Jason Knight and Bosun Lawal are unavailable due to injury.
Quotes
"I think now we still have a chance. And even with three points, we can still qualify for the World Cup," Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson said.
"So let's not start to cry now, absolutely not. We need persons and players and staff to believe in what we are doing. That's the most important thing now.
"And look at this game as a challenge and an opportunity against Portugal to restore dignity, pride, and confidence in the team."
Head-to-Head
Portugal thrashed Ireland 3-0 in an international friendly match played at the Estadio Municipal de Aveiro in Aveiro in June 2024.
The Team of the Quincunxes have this edge in this rivalry against the Boys in Green, having registered nine wins, drawn three and lost four in 16 meetings.
