Matchday 36

Villarreal v Sevilla

Kick-off is at 19h00

Villarreal will look to firm their grip on third place in La Liga when they host improving Sevilla at La Ceramica on Wednesday, May 13.

The Yellow Submarine edged closer to their best league finish in 13 years with a 1-1 draw against Real Mallorca on May 10, having seen Atletico Madrid lose 1-0 to Celta Vigo one day earlier.

Marcelino's side opened up a six-point gap to Los Colchoneros with nine left to play for, although the two teams still have to face one another on the final day of the campaign.

The Castellon outfit are unbeaten in their last five games and another draw in midweek will see them equal last term's tally of 70 points in a season.

The Palanganas gave themselves some breathing space to the relegation zone with a 2-1 victory over Espanyol on May 9 -their third win in five matches.

Luis Garcia's side registered back-to-back wins for the first time since October as they pulled three points clear of 18th-placed Alaves in 13th position.

A first triumph in Villarreal since 26 November 2017 would go a long way to guaranteeing Sevilla's survival should Alaves (18th) and Levante (19th) stumble on matchday 36.

Marcelino is targeting maximum points against the Andalusian club to bring his team closer to their objective and avoid the race for third place going down to the wire.

"We want to finish third. It's our goal," he declared. "This point puts us six clear with nine still to play. On the final matchday we'll face Atletico de Madrid in a direct duel.

"We want to win to get closer to that third position. We're back at home, where we're solid, against a rival like Sevilla who are also playing for a lot.

"Even though they won and that brings them closer to safety, we want to win to achieve the objective we've set ourselves."
