2024-25 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 37
Valencia v Athletic Bilbao
Mestalla
Valencia, Spain
Sunday, 18 May 2025
Kick-off is at 19h00
Athletic Bilbao will be wary of a resurgent Valencia when they lock horns at the Mestalla in the penultimate round of the
La Liga season on Sunday, May 18.
Los Che haven't enjoyed much success against the Lions in recent times, winning just one of their last 10 league encounters, which came in the corresponding fixture last term (1-0).
The Basque outfit have won four of those meetings, including a 1-0 victory at San Mames in the early stages of the current campaign on August 28.
However, Carlos Corberan's side are making a late push for European football after a 3-0 triumph over Getafe on May extended their unbeaten run to an impressive 10 matches and took them into the top 10.
Athletic are looking to fend off the challenge of Villarreal and Real Betis for fourth place, with a 1-0 win against Alaves on May 11 maintaining the thee-point gap to the Yellow Submarine, who beat Girona 1-0.
Corberan is relishing the prospect of bringing back European nights to the Mestalla and insists he will be doing everything in his power to make that a reality.
"I'm not afraid of the word and I'm not dizzy talking about it. I don't think saying it or not saying it will change anything. I'm excited... and focused on the next one (game)," the Spaniard said.
"I think there's nothing that makes me more proud than telling you that the season isn't over and that we're going into the next game with the absolute desire to win, with our minds set on trying to get the most out of it."
Athletic counterpart Ernesto Valverde hailed his players for giving a perfect response against the Babazorros after crashing out to Manchester United in the Europa League semi-finals three days earlier.
"We came into this off the back of a defeat on Thursday that hurt us and we had to get our act together and we've done just that," Valverde said.
"Today it was clear from the start that both teams had a lot at stake, we're at the end of the season. We're a persevering team and as a result of pushing hard we've picked up a victory which means a lot to us.
"We've been knocked out of the Europa League, but we have to keep fighting in LaLiga."
