At 48, Jonathan Byrd will be one of the oldest competitors at the upcoming PGA Puerto Rico Open and will hope to make his experience count at the Grand Reserve Golf Course this week.
What to know about Jonathan Byrd
Byrd turned professional in 2000 after playing on the Buy.com Tour, now known as the popular Korn Ferry Tour. After claiming the Buy.com Charity Pro AM title, Byrd entered the professional stage with a bang.
After making his PGA Tour debut in 2002, Byrd won the Buck Challenge that same year before being named the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Adding to his early success, Byrd also recorded wins at the BC Open in 2004 and the John Deere Classic three years later.
The American golfer is a five-time PGA Tour winner, having bagged the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals For Children Open and Hyundai Tournament of Champions between 2010 and 2011 along with the aforementioned competitions.
With seven professional titles to his name, Byrd’s highest ranking as a pro came in at 39 on 5 June, 2011.
What did he say
Reflecting on his golfing journey so far, Byrd expressed how much he has enjoyed his career and hinted at an extended period in the sport.
“My favourite thing is just having my family just travelling with me, my kids are young,” Byrd said earlier this season.
“We made some great memories, even before the kids. We had to go to great places, golf has afforded me a lot of opportunities.
“It will continue to do so, so I’m very thankful”.
