France will face their biggest test yet at
Euro 2024 when they go up against title favourites Spain in the semi-finals at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Tuesday, July 9.
Les Bleus have reached the penultimate stage of the tournament without really hit their stride in Germany, although they remain unbeaten after five matches.
The two-time European Championship winners finally ended their penalty hoodoo after beating Portugal 5-3 in a shootout on July 5 following 120 minutes of goalless football in the last eight.
Didier Deschamps was part of the team that overcame Italy on penalties in the 1998 World Cup quarter-finals, with France having since lost the shootout lottery to the Azzurri in the 2006 World Cup final, Switzerland in the Euro 2020 round of 16 and Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final.

Kylian Mbappe didn't take one of the spot-kicks against the Selecao as he had been substituted in the first half of extra time and Deschamps revealed that his star striker had asked to come off due to feeling fatigued.
"He was beginning to really feel it. Kylian is always very honest with me and the team, and it got to the point where he no longer felt able to accelerate," Deschamps said.
"Given everything that has happened to him, that he is not as fit as he would like to be, plus he has had a back problem and the injury to his nose, he is hanging in there.
"He knows he is not on his best form and with all the effort he put in he was very tired."
Mbappe made the difference in the last meeting between the two teams when he scored the winner in the 2021 UEFA Nations League final as Les Bleus triumphed 2-1 over La Furia Roja.
