The Basque derby at San Mames will take on extra importance when Athletic Bilbao lock horns with Real Sociedad in the late kick-off on Sunday, February 1.
The Lions are in freefall at the moment after a 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on January 24 extended their winless run to seven matches and saw them drop down to 13th place in La Liga.
Ernesto Valverde's side have picked up just one point out of a possible nine in 2026 to leave them only three clear of the relegation zone ahead of their 195th meeting with Erreala.
Athletic were beaten 3-2 in the reverse fixture at the Reale Arena on November 1 and they will be desperate to prevent their local rivals from doing the derby league double over them.

Sociedad have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since losing 2-1 to Girona on December 12 which resulted in the dismissal of Sergio Francisco as head coach two days later.
Pellegrino Matarazzo has made an unbeaten start to his tenure after recording three wins and two draws to take his side into the top half of the table.
A 3-1 victory over Celta Vigo on January 25 saw La Real close within five points of the European place in eighth spot.

Valverde is determined to stop the rot after losing back-to-back games in the league and shipping five goals in the process, having gone down 3-2 to Real Mallorca on January 17.
"We're not on a good run in La Liga and we want to put an end to this negative spiral of results," he said.
