Espanyol will look to maintain their European challenge when they welcome Rayo Vallecano to the RCDE Stadium on Sunday, December 7.
The Parakeets have emerged as surprise contenders for a place in Europe after losing just four of their opening 14 matches in
La Liga.
Manolo Gonzalez's side, who finish 14th in the league last season, won three of their first four games before seeing their unbeaten start come to an end with a 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid on September 20.
After enduring a mini slump, the Catalan club won four of their next six outings, with a 1-0 success against Celta Vigo on November 30 taking them level with Real Betis (5th) on 24 points in sixth position.
The Red Sashes briefly broke into the top 10 after wining three games on the spin in October, but they've struggled for results since then.
Inigo Perez's side are winless in their last matches, although back-to-back 0-0 draws against Real Madrid and Real Oviedo took them level with Real Sociedad (9th), Elche (10th), Sevilla (12th) and Celta Vigo (13th) on 16 points.
Gonzalez insists that qualifying for Europe is the furthest thing from his mind as he is prioritising the 42-point mark to ensure the team's safety before considering other objectives.
"I always have my sights set on us reaching 42 points. People might say I'm being repetitive, but we're not complacent," the Spaniard said.
"We won't be complacent or relax, but we've been through a very tough time, surviving relegation and achieving promotion in recent seasons.
"We need to reach those 42 points quickly, and then we'll look at other objectives. We can't afford to make any mistakes."
